I’m about to change all capacitors on a vintage stereo from the late 70’s.
I have a question about one of them, a 1500uF 35v capacitor. It has a ”hat” on it with a cable connected to ground. Think its there to pevent some hum noise. Or do anyone have a clue?
The capacitor has a diameter of 22.3mm, so the hat will not fit the new capacitor, cant find the exact size even if I look for higher voltage.
Can I skip the hat, or maybe modify it to fit the new one?

Never seen such an arrangement before! Looks to me to be 'audiofoolery' as the cap is isolated from the body of the capacitor.

Remove the cap and see how the system operates - I suspect you won't notice any difference. Worst case is you could fabricate a new 'hat' to fit a different capacitor by using some copper tape foil - easily obtained.

Yeah it shouldn't be needed, would love to hear the designer's explanation of why it's there.
