Bootloaders

I want to make an application which with an Microchip controller e.g.
18F2550 which can be programmed with the monitor program which will be
connected through RS232 or USB.

Does anyone have some examples and/or PC software and bootloaders which
programs the Microchip controllers through the serial port and/or the USB
port.

This gives me a lot of help for Serial, is there also something like this
for USB???

If I write (accidently) 0xFFh in the last EEPROM memory space the microchip
is put in boot mode.
How (where) should I change the code that after a certain time (eg 30 sec of
idle) it writes 0x00h to the last EEPROM space and resets itself to normal
operation mode???
