this is a sony 53xbr35 that's probably 8 or 10 years old.
i turned it on last night and saw the pic at the url below.
any idea what's wrong and if it's worth fixing? i really
wasn't planning on taking the HD plunge quite yet :).
thanks!

Thanks very much. I got some more specific info
as well, so if anyone else happens to google looking
for this info, here is what I was told:

Pull the speaker grill and check the fuses F901 and F902 on the convergence
board. If one
is open, you have a bad output IC (IC1704 or IC1705). Replace them both.
Don't try to
adjust anything or you can make things worse.

Probably worth looking into but one other suggestion, simply unplug the set
from the 120V for a bit then try it again.

I had a similar model a while back, bought new. One night while watching it,
the set made a snap and the picture was quite similar to yours. Tried power
cycling a few times, figured it just went bad.

Since it was under warranty (probably was 2 months old at the time), I
called to have them look at it. The service appointment was for monday, the
set crapped out thursday night. Tried it on and off everyday, same thing.

Monday morning I figured to pull it out into the room and move away the
surround sound speakers so the guy could open it up without making a mess of
everything.

Did that, unplugged it, hooked it up to an extention cord and made sure the
antenna was at least hooked up so he could see the problem and son of a
bitch, the set was perfect.

Tried it a few times, on/off, unplug, plug in, worked every time.

Got on the phone to cancel the appointment, they were already on their way.

He showed up, I explained the story to him, he just shrugged his shoulders
never touching the set and said "it happens sometimes".

Never did look up the schematic to see a possible cause but no power to the
convergence board makes sense (picture looks like a ribbon). Just can't
think what could of been "stuck" that the mains pulling could of cured.

Hmm, just checked, not the same, was a kp53v75.

Free to try anyway.

I haven't done anything yet, this weekend I'm going to open the TV and
verify
the problem. Monday I'll need to price the parts and then I'll need to see
if
I can find someone that will replace the parts for a reasonable amount of
$$$.
If that doesn't make financial sense, I guess I'll be selling off my Atari
Quantum
to pay for a new TV.

Yeah.... I already know :). Took me years to find one, but it's
been sitting in my friend's basement now for many more years.
I love it, there are probably only a couple hundred left in
existance, but I keep asking myself what good does it do me.
Besides, video game prices are dropping and will probably
never return. Between MAME, the .COM bust and most
of the generation that grew up with the game now with
families as a priority, it will probably never appreciate again.
I saw they were selling for as much as $4500 around '01 and
'02, now I'd be lucky to get $2500. Tough call...................

Just an update, in my case the parts I need are the STK4278L
which I ordered two of for $21.59 including shipping from
http://www.electronicsic.com/P_STK4278L.htm
($7.99 of that was shipping, bastards!)

So hopefully after these and 1 fuse, I'll be back in business.
Next step is either braving the soldering myself or finding
someplace that can do it. Not sure what sort of business
actually solders anymore, they all seem to just like replacing
boards at best.

i just received the STKs, however i talked to a local shop who was actually
familiar with my issue (they asked me if it was an XBR when they heard
the symptoms). they told me that there are likely a couple of other
problems, namely an IC on the left side of the board as well. they also
suggested i talk to a local company they get all their parts from who has
fixed dozens of these things. i've been trying to reach them but they
haven't
been answering the phone. perhaps they went on vacation last week without
an answering machine, i dunno, hopefully they're around tomorrow.

turns out the place i was told to call went out of business, so i just
dropped
the board off at the shop that recommended the other shop along with the
STKs. once it's fixed i'll post the components that needed replacing.

well the board is back and so far so good. my wife picked it
up so i need to call tomorrow to find out if anything else was
bad. the work order says something about some additional
soldering. only thing im not happy about is he told my wife
he quoted me $100, so that's the charge, when in reality
he told me 'it shouldn't cost more than $100 depending
on what i find wrong with it'. on the other hand, labor
these days is expensive and it's working, so as long as
it stays working i should count myself lucky it was only
$125ish (with the new STKs) and not $1000+ for a new
TV. On the other, other hand I was almost hoping it
wasn't salvagable and had my eyes on a Panasonic
AE700U front projector :).
