hello again.
need to find out how to easily find equivilant electronic components.

I thought I would be able to cross reference parts on the internet easily
but I can only find individual manufacturers databases.

eg. I need to know where I can get a 2sc3281 transistor
I can go to "on semiconductors" website and get there equivilant MJL3281A
but I really want to be able to get a few equivilants from different
manufacturers so I can see where I can get them.

Also what are my options apart from jaycar and radio parts?
Why are Radio Parts appear to be sooo much more expensive (for resistors and
transistors I've looked up)

Do I really need to spend $80 on data books?

thanks,
gavin.

** The 2SC3281 does not have many "equivalents", Motorola makes a version
with the same number.

WES sell the 2SC5200 as an improved replacement since so many 2SC 3281s
are in fact fakes and do not work.

See http://sound.westhost.com/counterfeit.htm for details.

Be aware that while the Moto/On Semi MJL part is fine ELECTRICALLY
it is different insofar as it has much thicker legs - which can be a
right royal PITA if trying to use it in a PTH baord (QSC
f'rinstance).

** Motorola MJL package leg = 47 x 26 thou.

Toshiba 2SC package leg = 41 x 25 thou.

That's not a big difference.

BTW How stupid of QSC not to make the PCB holes compatible and use Asian
brand power semis.

Maybe Pat Quilter spends too much time chasing bears in the
forest.

Thanks all.
have tried jaycar, dse, and radio parts today and found nothing. I'm not
sure I'm capable of working out what will do the same job. It's for the
voltage regulator circuit in the power supply in the "Tab electronics guide
to understanding electricity and electronics second edition" if anyone has
the book and can help.

will give it another week to think about.

thanks
gavin.

Hello Gavin,
the fellows here can help you but lets not concentrate on an
individual part for the moment.
I gather that you are interested in building a power supply
that you have seen in a book that you have.
If you have a Dick Smith and Jaycar catalogue that is a good
start because once you explain performance wise, what you
are building then the guys here can recomnend suitable parts
from the catalogues.

Over to you Gavin, tell us about the power supply.
Voltage Out?
Variable voltage maybe?
Max current ?
Do you have a transformer?
What have you built up to now?

Once the fellows have some details then they can help you.

I'm building a 36V Dual polarity voltage adjustable power supply with 1.5A
current limit.
I have my 50V center tapped transformer/diode bridge/ and 4400uF caps
mounted in a VCR case

The transistors I need are for Q1 and Q2 in the folowing link.

http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~astrogav/regulator.html

I was thinking the MJE2955/MJE3055 out of the jaycar catalogue.
any help or comments are appreciated.
sorry for the short explanation but I have to get up early
gavin.

Hello Gavin,
yes, I would go along with your choice here.

IME, trusting an equivalent table only is inviting trouble as
you are at the mercy of the table compiler. eg typos etc. and
not all parameters are likely to be interchangeable which
could be critical in some designs.

Instead, the equivalents table should be the starting point
for thoroughly evaluating the data sheets. A link for Jap
transistor data is...
