Let's say that I want to run an A/C device. If it should fail, I'd like a backup A/C device to turn on to take the place of the first. This seems like it would be a really easy circuit to build, and perhaps something is already offered that does this. Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as products or schematics? Thanks.

An answer to this question depends on how the primary A/C fails. Will it stop drawing power, or will it still draw power but not work as intended?
In the first case you can sense the current into the primary A/C and turn on the secondary when the power consumption of the first A/C falls below a certain threshold (which would have to be defined depending on the characteristics of the primary A/C).
In the second case you will need a asensor that detects the failure of the primary A/C (e.g. a temperature sensor) and turns on the secondary.
