Hello!

I am doing a project that will use 2N3055 transistors. BUT my local shop is almost
out of 2N3055 transistors!
However they have a lot of TIP3055 in stock.

Can I replace the 2N3055 by the TIP3055 transistor?

Thanks!

yes, just remember that the
TIP is most likely a T-220 case style where is the
2n3055 is most likely a large CanTanger , i just can't
remember the syle name at the time..
you must be carefull on heating coditions with the T-220
case style.

It's better than that. The TIP3055 is in the TO-218 package which
uses the same pin spacing as the TO-3 metal package. You bend the
two outer leads down and use just one bolt for the collector tab.

As others have noted, the 2N3055 is in the TO-3 can,
most 3055 equivalents are in the TO-220 case. THe heat
sinking capability of the TO-220 is good, but not as
good as the TO-3, so the power limits are lower -- all
else being equal.

What's a CanTanger? Can't figure it out... ;-P

It is simply a TO-3 package.

Thank you! I think I will wait until the 2N3055's come.

well thats interesting. i didn't know that.
or though come to think of it i have seen
that done in place of a TO-3 but never gave
it any thought! :))

According to the datasheet at ON,
http://www.onsemi.com/pub/Collateral/TIP3055-D.PDF
the TIP3055 is good for 90W, and IIRC, the 2N3055 is good for 115W. So
the TIP3055 is good for 25W less than the 2N3055.

I'm not trying to be picky or whatever, but in my mind, a TO-3 with two
mounting holes and a lotta metal between them is always gonna be better
than a single mounting hole and less than half the metal of a TO-3.
