Terry had asked about obtaining the proceedings from the
11th International Symposium on the Science & Technology of
Light Sources (LS:11) to be held in Shanghai 20 May through
24 May. Here is an update on the symposium.

The symposium web site is http://www.ls-symposium.org/. You
can find a list of papers to be presented at LS:11 but this
list does not, unfortunately, include abstracts.

The informal committee that has organized the LS symposia
since 1975 has decided to form a more structured
organization. The Foundation for the Advancement of the
Science & Technology of Light Sources (FAST-LS) has been
formed in the UK as a non-profit entity. More information
about FAST-LS, which is relative new, can be found at
http://www.fast-ls.org/.

Now, about the proceedings.

Copies of the proceedings of prior LS:X symposia have been
transferred to CD-ROM and are available from the FAST-LS
secretary, Georges Zissis. His e-mail address is
[email protected]-tlse.fr (He gave me specific
permission to post his address here as he is convinced the
SPAM filter at his university will deal with any SPAM.) The
Proceedings from LS:1 through LS:8 were scanned from the
printed version. They are very useful, but cannot be
searched. Starting with LS:9 papers were submitted as
electronic documents and the CD-ROM contains individual
PDFs.

Copies of the LS:11 proceedings will be available on CD-ROM
at the conference and after, also from Georges Zissis. I'm
not sure if he will be able to provide copies of the LS:11
proceedings before the end of the conference.

Thanks for this helpful information, Vic. As others may know, these LS
sessions are full of technical details and give a good sense of what light
source researchers and product engineers are thinking about. The old
proceedings are a great resource for how things work. The LS organizers are
to be congratulated for figuring out a way to trade important information
for the benefit of all without the usual commercial sniping and promotion
that, unfortunately, is all to common at IES and other industry meetings.

It's also nice to read material in full without apologies for including the
math. I hope that the new LS organization will continue the traditions.

I've been going through the old proceedings for some
projects I am currently working on. It's quite interesting
to see that material from 10 to 20 years ago, that may not
have been recognized as important at the time, set the
foundation for products that now dominate the marketplace.
At LS:5 in York, UK in 1989 Philips presented the first
paper on low mercury fluorescent lamps. I believe this work
lead directly to the introduction of the Alto lamp in 1995.
In 1989 John Waymouth also presented a paper on selective
incandescent emitters and presented ideas which may be
included in the high performance incandescent lamps that GE
has been talking about.
It's also nice to read material in full without apologies for including the
math. I hope that the new LS organization will continue the traditions.

The new organization was establish only to set up a formal
framework to handle the finances. It should not change the
character of the meetings.

Most of the credit goes to our European colleagues. It was considerable
work to set up a formal legal organization to carry on after the founders
are retired or gone. Robin Devonshire, who was one of the drivers, said,
"This has been a conference organized by old friends [since 1975] and we
need a structure so that it can continue."

As Vic knows, it's a lot of work to put on the conference, and requires a
lot of volunteer time. I believe this will continue. The 2010 conference
will be in Eindhoven.

The CDs containing the proceedings of LS:11 have been created and will be on
sale at the conference in Shanghai. They will also be available for
purchase at the FAST-LS web site after the conference (www.fast-ls.org).
