Texas Instruments’ TPS3899 Voltage Supervisor is characterised by having a small body size (just 1.50 millimetres by 1.50 millimetres) and has applications in a wide range of sectors including consumer electronics and motor drives.

Product Description

The TPS3899 is a precision voltage supervisor with ±0.5% threshold accuracy. The component includes a push-button monitor and features a programmable delay complemented with a precision hysteresis that works to eliminate false reset signals when monitoring a voltage rail or push-button signals.

During start-up and when the threshold voltage across the supply voltage pin is reached, the device circuitry requires additional time to start a reset delay timer. The 1.50mm-by-1.50mm device appears in a six-pin very very thin small outline no-lead package. More information on the product’s pins of the device is covered next.

Pin Functions

The product has six pins and each pin plays a vital role. The names of the pins and their respective descriptions are outlined below.

  • VDD: the supply voltage pin
  • CTR: the capacitor programmable reset delay
  • CTS: the capacitor programmable sense delay
  • Sense: the input for monitored supply voltage
  • Reset: the output pin (with three output topologies, which are open-drain active-low, push-pull active low, and push-pull active high)
  • GND: the ground pin

The voltage to operate the device is fed in via the supply input pin. The capacitor programmable reset delay (or CTR) pin and the capacitor programmable sense delay (or CTS) pin allow users to adjust the delay time of the signals on the reset pin. Like VDD, the sense pin is also an input pin that is connected to the voltage that may be monitored for fixed variants.

Regarding the CTS and CTR pins, the sense and the device’s reset time delay can be programmed to be a minimum of 50 microseconds and 80 microseconds respectively and a maximum time delay value of 6.2 seconds can be achieved by introducing a 10 microfarad delay capacitor.

Furthermore, the output pin may either be an active low (which can be in an open-drain configuration or push-pull configuration) or an active high (which is always in a push-pull configuration). The component asserts the output pin when the sense pin drops below a fixed negative threshold voltage for the duration of the sense delay set by the user-programmed CTS pin.

The internal comparator of the product features a built-in hysteresis. As noted earlier, hysteresis works to eliminate false reset signals, which prevents erroneous output reset release.

Electrical Characteristics

The TPS3899 is a nano-power-efficient device. It can be operated comfortably from an input supply voltage that ranges from 0.85V to 6V to achieve any of the two active-low output configurations. The active high output configuration requires a minimum voltage of 1V to be fed into the supply input pin. The fixed threshold voltage of the device varies from 0.8V to 5.4V.

In addition, it is recommended to place a capacitor (0.1 microfarads) between the supply input pin and the ground pin. The recommended operating temperature of the product varies from −40⁰C to 125⁰C.

Applications

The product finds applications in consumer electronics such as smartphones and desktop computers. In industrial applications, building automation and motor drives are typical areas where the component will also prove useful to users.
