Socionext’s SC1230 Series of radar sensors can detect location, movement, plus presence, direction, and distance—opening up a whole host of potential applications.

The Socionext SC1230 Series of Sensors

The Socionext SC1230 Series includes 2 sensors that can each detect the location and movement of individuals with an ultra-high degree of sensitivity.

Both sensors require no prior knowledge to deploy (making it ideal for integration in smart homes) and they are both smaller and more power-efficient than competing sensors. Such benefits are achieved through the incorporation of signal processing functions into the sensors (therefore reducing the number of external components).

As for the question of what is different between the 2 sensors in the SC12340 Series, the SC1232AR3 measures the presence and distance of an object, whereas the more advanced SC1233AR3 has the additional ability to detect direction. Both low-cost sensors are packed in a 64-pin ball grid array package that measures a mere 9 mm by 9 mm by 1.18 mm.

Both chips feature a built-in antenna and operate at 0.5mW (for the detection of people), with a power supply of 1.8V and 3.3V.

The 2 sensors record neither mage nor sound: this is to combat privacy issues that would otherwise persist when developing new functions based on human behaviour, as observed by the devices.

Potential Applications

The SC1230 Series has a huge range of potential applications, particularly in IoT networks and smart homes.

It is expected that these sensors will be used in the development of new IoT-based services that are based on human behaviours (such as movement). Both sensors can be deployed behind non-metallic surfaces (e.g. plasterboard) while still recording information and generating data.

The SC1230 Series comes at a time when the so-called 'digital transformation' is taking centre stage and seamlessly integrating the physical and digital worlds. Indeed, for the 'digital transformation' to be successful, it’s sensitive, compact, and low-power technology such as the SC1230 Series that will be required for the implementation in IoT devices.
