This system-in-package features a 3D accelerometer and gyroscope performing at 1.25 mA in high-performance mode, enabling always-on-low-power features.

Providing an optimal motion experience for the end-consumer, STMicroelectronics' LSM6DS3 is specifically designed for where motion is a core focus, namely in consumer devices such as step counters, touchscreens (tap and double-tap detection), and IoT or other connected devices.

The LSM6DS3 provides significant motion and tilt functions, free-fall detection, 6D orientation detection, vibration monitoring, and intelligent power saving features.

Product Features

Delivering an "always-on" experience with low power consumption for accelerometers and gyroscopes, the device keeps power consumption at 0.9 mA in combo normal mode and 1.25 mA in combo high-performance mode up to 1.6 kHz.

Power is delivered via analog supply between 1.71V and 3.6V. Other features include an embedded temperature sensor, SPI/I2C serial interface with main processor data sync feature, and green compliance thanks to RoHS and ECOPACK.

The device features an acceleration range of ±2/±4/±8/±16 g and an angular rate range of ±125/±250/±500/±1000/±2000 dps. Its temperature range is -40 to +85°C. Measuring a mere 2.5mm x 3mm x 0.83mm, the LSM6DS3 boasts an ultra-low compact profile.

STMicroelectronics' LSM6DS3

The LSM6DS3 supports main OS requirements and offers real, virtual, and batch sensors with 8kb for dynamic data batching. STMicroelectronics' LSM6DS3 makes use of manufacturing processes that are robust and mature, already used to produce micromachined accelerometers and gyroscopes.

The device's sensing elements are manufactured using STM's own specialized micromachining processes and the IC interfaces are created using CMOS technology. CMOS technology allows for the design of a completely bespoke and dedicated circuit that better matches the characteristics of the sensing element.

‌High robustness, particularly to mechanical shock, makes the LSM6DS3 the go-to choice for systems designers in the creation and manufacture of reliable products for both industry and consumers.

What Makes the LSM6DS3 Stand Out?

Its compliance with major mobile OSes (including Android K and L), supporting S4S sync for sensors, and the presence of a three-axis digital accelerometer and a three-axis digital gyroscope with an extended angular rate of 4,000 degrees per second makes the LSM6DS3 ideal for intense, fast-moving gameplay.

The device also enables superior augmented reality (AR) on smartphones to allow for more immersive virtual reality experiences---something of a growing trend.

Presence of native three-axis accelerometer and gyroscope, coupled with step detecting functionality and motion and tilt detection ensure highly accurate recognition and processing of movement and activity.
