Increase Performance of Battery-Powered Products with IXYS SolarMD Modules

With a name inspired by the use of multiple dies (MD) in 1 module package, the SolarMD product line from IXOLAR is famed as the go-to solution for various battery-powered, handheld, and wearable consumer products—plus, it suits applications across industry and the charging of backup batteries or small off-the-grid products.

SolarMD modules are made up of several high-efficiency monocrystalline solar cells and feature power conversion as high as 25%. They are fully encapsulated in polycarbonate film to protect from harsh environments; plus, the modules can be both manually-soldered or soldered using a low-temperature silver paste with oven curing.

 

SolarMD Modules and Features

There are over 20 different modules available from the SolarMD product line; however, they each share several features and characteristics.

Typically, the cell efficiency of the SolarMD family of solar modules is around 22%. This provides an extended run time in ‘low light’ conditions while simultaneously increasing battery life in a smaller footprint—allowing it to be easily deployed in portable consumer and industrial products.

In addition to the fact they can be used individually, SolarMD modules can be used and arranged in a series or parallel combinations to increase performance and meet the demands of many different applications with varying power requirements.

When used as a series, the SolarMD modules still retain their overall ~22% efficiency, which is characteristic of the IXOLAR range of SolarMD modules.

Additional features include high mechanical robustness, long life, and stable output as part of a stable package.

 

Potential Applications

SolarMD modules are ideal for use across a wide range of devices in both consumer and industrial settings. With an operating temperature of −40°C to 90°C, they can be used in harsh environments—both shielded and unshielded from external elements—and both indoors and out.
