XP EOL extended again

Microsoft has given another lease of life to Windows XP only days before
PC makers have to stop selling it.

Windows XP reaches its end of life on 30 June but Microsoft has now said
it can continue being sold until June 2010 but only on cheap desktops.

The decision follows one made in April to extend the life of XP on low
cost laptops until the same date.

It comes as Dell, HP and Lenovo exploit loopholes in Microsoft's
licensing terms to keep putting XP on machines.

It's a somewhat odd policy, selling what I'd say in many ways is the
better product on cheaper platforms.

I think MICRO$~1 is selling themselves short - he should throw some
programmers at writing some Doze eye candy on top of a linux kernel.

Imagine the ads: "Microsoft Linux! We've FINALLY fixed all of those
pesky security holes! Only FORTY DOLLARS!"

I saw a mac ad where they really trashed Vista: The mac guy is just
a guy, the MS team are a bunch of suits, and one MS guy says, "I've
been running for a whole week without a problem. I've been running for a
whole week without a problem. I've been running for a whole week without
a problem. I've been running for a whole week without a problem. ..."

Various articles about this say that Microsoft is doing this
to compete against Linux in the low-cost market. For example,
iirc Microsoft lowered its license fee to $5 for XO laptops.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Laptop_per_Child says $10
more for an XO with XP but iirc twice as much memory is
supplied with the XP version vs. the Linux version.

Read somewhere recently that one PC maker is shipping PCs with Linux in
ROM.

Just like the good old days ! Am embedded and FREE O/S !

It doesn't matter what perceived or real flaws Eeyore has.
You asked a question that was easily answered by a quick
Google search, thus wasting the time of everyone who read
it. You should have either not replied or you should have
done the web search and posted the answer thus saving us all
that bit of time rather than wasting it. It's a small thing,
but many small things add up.
