I will not be wiring it to an air conditioner but the fan did come from one. I would like to wire it to be able to use like a normal fan. Hooked up to a 3 position or even a dimmer switch. I have an old fan carcass. The motor in it is bad. Im pretty sure i cant use the switch from that or can I?tmp_25508-20160706_152014-1371992756.jpg

It's a 240v ac cap start/run induction motor which cannot be run from a dimmer to control speed. Neither can it be controlled from a 3 pos sw without that sw being part of a variable frequency drive. It is possible that it may be wound as a 2, 4 or 6 pole giving speed control via switching the appropriate circuit for 2850, 1440 or 900 rpm but not enough info to determine. Edit...closer view says no, just single speed motor.

Ok. Ibdont think i would be able to provide any more info without taking it apart. I was actually able to get it to spin via 120 volt without a cap but it gets quite hot. Might not be too safe to do it that way. I connected red with orange to a 120 source and black to the other side of the source and it spins up.

Would it be detrimental to run it this way or is it safe? It feels like its going to over heat but with air passing by it might cool it off

Not a good idea at all to try to run it either at 120v OR in the wrong configuration.

Can you give us a better pic (straight on ) of the circuit diagram on the motor.

o_O Hard to see from here.:)
