When was PIC invented?

    How old is this PIC programmable logic technology, is it part of
    the electronics syllabuse in UK universites?

    in my knowledge during late seventies there was already a PIC
    (peripheral interface controller) made by former General Instrument. The
    technology was NMOS and masked ROM only. The architecture was very
    closed to the PIC16C5x series that appeared in late eighties probably
    during 1989.
