What's different about White LEDs?

I've seen several articles and circuits in magazines for White LED related
stuff. What's so special about them besides the color?

I've seen several articles and circuits in magazines for White LED related
stuff. What's so special about them besides the color?

Electrically they are blue LEDs, so they have fairly high Vf. The main
distinction is *how* they are typically used- for things like LCD
backlights on portable devices where there may be an array of them,
and energy efficiency is important. There are few such applications
for, say, red LEDs.

They are (finally) a decent substitute for an incandescent light.
