Any general-purpose NPN device like a 2N3904.

That of course depends on which characteristics of the BC547B the
circuit depends, but in most cases any small-signal NPN transitor (but
watch out for pinout differences).

But why do you need a replacement?

Well it is listed in a circuit schematic I wish to build. I could not find
them at any local stores, I guess there old.
so I thought I would ask for a replacement equivalent, thinking that
somebody in repair would know.

i also found a chart that recommends BC337/2N5818

many thanks

They're ten cents apiece or something like $7 or $8 a hundred.
