What to run motor with.

    I am building a horse equisizer. It will be run with a 2hp motor. I was wondering about controlling the motor. I want to be able to stop/start , forward/reverse, speed control. I can buy a fairly inexpensive VFD's to do this but I have also found switches for each function. Is any method preferable? Any thoughts or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
