I just bought a weller soldering iron that uses a walwart that puts out 9volts dc and plugs into the back of it. Would the iron run on a 9volt dc battery? I have a rechargeable 9v battery and am curious if it will work but also don't want the iron damaged

Unlikely you'll damage the iron. It will probably not even get hot.

The amount of power you can get out of a 9V battery is pretty low, and the rate you can get it out is low enough that it is unlikely that the iron would heat up enough to get close to working (unless it has a very, very small tip).

Having said that, I have seen soldering irons supposedly capable of running from USB. (They're not much more that a novelty.)
