Weird-colored TV

  1. I've had a Sony TV for like 6-7 years. Recently the colors started
looking strange, for example everything looks very red, yellow looks
almost exactly like red and green barely shows up at all. The OSD is
green, too, which makes it very hard to make out.

I've had it repaired once and it looked ok for a couple of days but
then it's the same. The guy said it can't be fixed. Is it true?

Don't really know without at least the model number and a full diagnostic
report, My guess is that it may be broken again.

  3. It sounds like your blue is low or dead. It could be anything from a
bad CRT to a component in the circuitry used for the blue gun.

Model number? You'll get no useful specific advice on this NG without
    basic info like that.

    Recently the colors started
EITHER: a bad connection on CRT neck board - resolder around
resistors etc. OR: a problem with the tube itself. There are various
ways of checking this; see the FAQ www.repairfaq.org. (one method is
to swap , say, the red drive to the green gun on the CRT board to see
    which gun has a problem....)
That story is contradictory. If you "had it repaired", it sounds like
you didn't take it to a professional - where i come from, repairs
should last longer than "a couple of days". If "the guy said it can't
be fixed", then how was it possible for it to have been repaired
initially? This sounds like intermittent solder connections to me.

If you really want this solved, get the set to a decent tech for a
reliable diagnosis not based around internet speculation.

    good luck,Ben

Any set can be repaired. The question is, "How much are you willing to
invest in to the parts, and the time to service it!".

Going by your description, the set is loosing the blue colour channel.
This can be anything from the CRT drive circuits to the CRT itself.
Considering the age of the set, I would not invest too much in to it.
Besides, the replacement CRT's for most models of sets that are older
than about 5 years are getting very scarce to be able to obtain, or have
rebuilt. The CRT replacement for most sets, would be more costly than a
new equivalent replacement set that would come with a full warranty.

When having an old set serviced, there are risks involved in
consideration of its future reliability. There are hundreds of parts in
these sets, and the odds are that it is possible to have more faults.
The time span is not predictable.
