Washing Machine Power Cord Replacement - How do I remove cord grommet?

I am trying to replace the power cord on a Maytag Automatic Washer
Model A8650. The original power cord got chewed and frayed. The
original cord enters/exits the machine through a small hole in the
bottom of the console. The hole has the power cord wire going through
the center of it, surrounded by a black plastic "cord grommet". The
cord fits extremely snug in the grommet - to the point where you
cannot slide it in either direction through the grommet. I have
already opened the control panel and disconnected the wires so the
ends are free, but I can't get the old wire out of the machine because
it is so tight through that grommet. So, either 1) How do I get the
old cord out of the grommet? or 2) How do I get both the grommet and
the cord out of the machine? The grommet looks like it should be able
to be popped out somehow, but I can't figure it out.

Most grommets can be removed or installed by grabbing it with a pair of
pliers and squeezing it and thereby making it smaller, and then it pops out of
the hole. The grommet is two piece (well, sort of). There is a part that is U
shaped, and a smaller part that fits in the top of the U that completes the
grommet. The two pieces are usually held together with a thin piece. Squeeze
the smaller part towards the center, and the grommet comes out.

I've had good results with squeezing these with a pair of slip-joint pliers
(that have the roughly oval-shaped opening between the jaws). You'll need
to do this on the side that's smaller, typically the inside, and then
while squeezing, start to move it through the hole. They're a bit of a
PIA, but real common in all sorts of stuff...

I just remembered, I have a tool that's made specifically made for strain
reliefs. It's a Heyco model 29. I bet it's at least 40 years old by now.

Squeeze the "cord grommet" with pliers.

I just remembered, I have a tool that's made specifically made for

A special tool made for those things? Wow. I've never actually seen such a
thing...

for a buck or two.

REFERENCE YOUR WASHING MACHINE PROBLEM
the simplest thing to do is , is to cut the wire / lead
very close to either side of the grommet
then simply use a sharp screw-driver and push the last bit
that remains through andnthen simply withdraw the grommet


failing that if you cannot push it out with a screw-driver
drill the cable out , again once you have cut the cable
either side of the grommet , as close as you can .

There is a special tool for intalling and removing them but a miniature
"vice-grips" needlenose pliars can be used in a pinch.
