Hello,

I'm looking for an inexpensive string potentiometer to replace a ten
turn precision potentiometer and gear rack.

Any ideas?

You've googled? There's string pots out there, but they're industrial
units so may not meet _your_ definition of "cheap".

Perhaps you'll need to roll your own -- Small Parts, Inc has flat
springs that extend & roll up like tape measures, you could have a
bobbin made to go onto your pot and carry the spring.

You should post this on sci.engr.control -- there's folks over there
that would know one way or another. When you post you should also
mention some reasons why your application may not need the features that
make the parts you've found on Google to be so expensive -- less
accuracy, less ruggedness, no need to be washed down with saltwater,
whatever.
