Can anyone help me with any ideas on how to fix a Sony CDX-4180FP
Radio/CD player in my car?

When you turn the volume up it sticks on that level and won't go up or
down no matter how much you turn the control knob.

It does seem to reset if you disconnect from the player from
power then connect again.

Thanks for any help.

Regards Boozo.

The volume control unit, or there is a defective component associated with
it, or there is a cold solder connection in its related circuit areas. The
radio would have to be opened, and troubshooted to find and resolve the
fault.

Many devices do not use a pot for volume anymore, especially if the
control can spin continuously. It may be a digital encoder that is fed
to a volume control chip. Either the chip or the encoder is not decoding
the volume down signal.
