I have a few spare laptops where the backlights of the lcds and the inverters seem to be broken.

When unable to find a schematic for the inverter or the motherboard I wondered if it would be a good idea to test the pinout voltages to the inverter from the motherboard inline with the nearest ground point on the motherboard with my multimeter in order to work out the required voltage for whatever inverter.

Is this a good idea to get the inverter voltages worked out or do I risk damaging something? Thanks.

    Welcome to EP.

I'm assuming you are talking about a non-LED screen.
    In this case
You can cheek the input voltage of the high voltage inverter, not a problem(low voltage).
I wouldn't try to check the inverter output (very high voltage) directly.
