VCR Sony SLV-998 Won't Auto Track

I know vcr's are passe, but I still like my slv 998's, problem is that it will record & play back perfectly, but when I take take a tape out of the 998 and try it in other recorders it will play but can't quite track right. Also when I try to play a tape recorded on another recorder on the 998, it does the same thing. It will play but can't quite track right. I even have another 998 and can not interchange tapes because of this. I cleaned the whole tape path and control head but nothing helps.
