Claude Lyons make variable transformers ("variacs") under the trade names
"Regavolt" and "Varatran".

Have a look at our website www.claudelyons.co.uk, and particularly at the
variable transformers page. There you can download a technical note, the
URL of which is http://claudelyons.co.uk/tech.pdf and which includes a
connection diagram.

The arrangement you want is called "over-voltage connection". The
terminal numbering on your unit may be different but the principle is the
same namely the bottom of the coil is connected to both input neutral and
output neutral. The input live goes to the tapping (connection point)
next down from the top of the coil. The output live is taken from the
brush (moving contact).

If you set your newsreader to use a fixed-pitch font (e.g. Courier) the
following diagram should make the connections clear:

)
___________)
220 )
)
)<-------- 0-250
)
INPUT _) OUTPUT
)
0 ___________Ý___________ 0

Hope this is clear. If you have difficulty downloading the Regavolt
Technical Note email me and I will send it to you directly. It also
gives useful information about protection (fusing) and other matters.
