Using Safe-T Beams for perimeter detection - why not?

Why not use Safe-T Beams, the kind that come on all garage door
openers, for use as perimeter detection? Someone crosses the beam, an
alarm is triggered. Seems like a cheap way to go for up to 20'
distances.

Has anyone tried this?

I'm assuming that these emit a voltage drop across the wires when the
beam is crossed, which could then easily be connected to a JK
flip-flop or some other circuit, but I can't find any tech data on
them.

We do. But their called "Photo Beams". And they can go distances up to 660'.
In the early days people used them in homes too. The disadvantage was they
are "active" as apposed to "Passive", so every time Mrs. Jones re-arranged
the living room she would block the path of the beam with the couch. Her
alarm wouldn't set up, and she'd call the alarm company to come out and fix
the problem. The industry nearly crossed into interior design...then came
the passive motion detector that has taken us where we are today...
