If you want to start a flame war, post this on rec.autos.tech. Some will
bring up the (superior) EU standards that mandate amber rear and side
mounted signals (just behind the front wheel) which address your issue.
The US car fans will fire back that these make a car look 'uncool'. If
you can't tell the difference between a loose rear brake lamp and a turn
signal, why should they have to suffer by ruining that neat '60s retro
look of all red plastic.

The EU regs on headlamp aim and beam pattern are also vastly superior.

All things being equal, I'd rather have good headlights than good
regulations.

That does not address the issue at all. I think they are a good thing,
and when autos used to have the signals in center front, they made
it possible to see from ONE side, which is a good thing. Seeing
from TWO sides is what I am after. The Datsun I just sold had side markers/signals
and had the turn signals BETWEEN the headlights. My truck has the signals
whee you can just see all around. Forget the Cavalier.

I'll look into rec.autos.tech.

Thats about the full extend of my rant. Put the turn signals BETWEEN the
headlights and there is NO problem.

Uh ? You're quite MAD.

The EU regulations for side repeaters totally fix the problem.

Show me a set of eyes that can see BOTH sides of a car at the same time without seeing the front or
back at the same time !

I can only imagine you have no brains.

We are looking for lights not sides.. If the lights are high enough we will see them.
That Toyota with the rear view mirrors and the LEDs high up on top of the mirrors
works great for me. That was the answer I had proposed. I guess Toyota
SAW THE LIGHT.

I was looking for examplse on mirrors with frontal view LED's.

They talk about increased visability to motorists and thats
what I'm talking about. One of my points is thats it also great
for pedestrians to know which way a motorist intends on going.

What has HEIGHT got to do with it ? Although Saabs have for a long time had high level additional
brakes lights. Another European originated saferty feature.

Then how can you see them on a vehicle that is at right angles to you
(at an intersection, for example)? The aim of placing turn signals at
the corners (outboard of the headlights) was that well designed
wrap-around signals can be seen from the sides.

Being exactly at right angles never occurs.

I sort of figured using only one lamp is the cheap way.

European cars have 'side repeaters'. No excuse ever not to see them. But
as usual, the USA's about 20 yrs behind.

They're not necessary on cars with lights that wrap around the corner
of the car. My 1988 Mustang was like that.

Cheers!

Thats fine. My 93 truck has wrap around lamps.
But the front is flat, not rounded. You can actually see the opposite side.

Depends how far they wrap and your view of the car. Repeaters totally solve the
problem.

Flat fronts aren't exactly aerodynamic. I suppose you like using more gas too ?

The 6 cylinder Dakota gets around 11-12 around town. No need for air flow.
On the highway it uses too much gas trying to go fast up hills.
The V8 gets better milage due to the gearing.
