Trying to build a 460-480v power supply for testing

    Hello guys,

    im trying to build a 460-480v AC Power supply for testing and programing frequency inverters
    i just need to turn them on, so i only need something with very low current.
    the guy that worked here befor got an tranformer from somewhere that draws 380v but not enoth.
    (Pri.volts 347/380 Sec.volts 120/240) yes is a step down transformer.
    now my question is could i get a transformer like:
    Primary Voltages:460V / 230V / 208V
    Secondary Voltages:115V / 24V
    Current Rating:870mA
    Power Rating:100VA
    so i get 460v?
    and what should i use to make it safe so if some one is touching it it won't kill you :confused:

    if your asking that question I am scared for you. even at ~900mA, there is enough there to take your life three times over and high voltage will make that scenario even more likely. Be careful

    You have 460V service at your work? Don't you mean you need a 120/240V primary and step up to 460V, you want to test at that high voltage, so that would be your secondary, the output?

    To make it safe if someone is touching it you need it to be isolated from any power source and all capacitors discharged.

    You also need to test that there is no residual voltage before you touch it, and even then, be very careful and probably use one hand.

    is ther a safety device that i could use like a GFCI that will trip if someone is accidentally touching it?

    I gather you live in a 115V place, since 870mA / 100VA = 115V. Why you mention 24, 208, & 230V is beyond me. You didn't reply to jacko's question btw..
    A step-down transformer can just as well be used as a step-up transformer.
    If you have two 50VA 115V-230V isolation transformers you can connect the 115V's in paralell, and the 230V's in series to get 460V 100VA from your 115V mains.
    The secondary should be floating, so if you touch only one of the phases no current will flow. There's nothing that can protect you if you touch both phases however.
    Of course the transformers and their connections should be enclosed and insulated, with proper mains connections on the outside.

    Thank you Resqueline i think thats what im going to do use two 50VA 115v-230v transformers and connect them in paralell its just for testing frequency inverters.
    And i'll put a big sticker on it "Danger 460Volts!"
