"A base is wired to a voltage or current and turns the transistor on or off.
Emitter and collectors leads connect to a positive or negative voltage source
    or ground. "

Can someone put more light into this? I just have two ends of wire whose either ends are on a battery.

What do you want to do?
Do you have a circuit you don't understand or just a transistor to test?
Do you have any basic knowledge of electronics?

Read up on transistor here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transistor

Sorry, but I think you are asking maybe a bit too much.
May I suggest that you first undestand how a transistor operates before you test one? Google
    transistor basics
The first hit for me was http://www.technologystudent.com/elec1/transis1.htm
    Good reading.

Once you've mastered these basics, you will know how to test a transistor, too.
Hint: A typical transistor has three leads so having a test instrument with only two measurement ports will not suffice to test the transistor completely.
