rebuilt an antique amplifier with all new capacitors and have replaced most
of the transistors with modern replacements, which made a massive
improvement but the main amplifier transistors are very obscure and very
hard to come by...

does anyone know of anything that will be a drop in replacement for these
and will be better. they are a TO-220 package.

RCA 16586 & RCA 16585

No one in this country even knows what they are and the one German seller
that sells them for 25 euros each wont give me any information on them.

** Assuming they are a NPN and PNP pair of transistors (ie not power
darlingtons) then for an amp with up to 40 watts power output I have often
used the MJE3055T and MJE2955T pair with great success. The TIP3055T and
TIP2955T pair are the same.

IME, worrying about just what those strange old RCA numbers are is a waste
of time.
