Hi everyone, I am new to the group and not electronics savvy so please bear
with me.
I have a brand new Toshiba 32" Model # 32A35C that is acting very strange
indeed. It is showing the same kind of color bleeding you get if you put a
magnet to close to any CRT TV. Like purple in one corner, green in the other
etc..This is the third TV I have brought home from the store that has been
showing this type of problem. I thought the first TV was defective so I had
it replaced with another of the same type(sanyo 35") but the second one was
even worse.
I figured that maybe the TV's were just crappy and/or were stored too close
to the stereos in the store(wal mart) so I went to a respectable furniture
store and bought a better brand name. I think? but this TV also showed some
bright and dark spots when looking at a black screen and some green and
brownish spots when looking at a white or even bright screen.I used THX test
patterns from the Star Wars dvd's along with some expensive Monster
Component Video cables running on a Toshiba SD-K750SU2 DVD Player also
bought brand new at the same time as the TV.
So here I am with 3 TV's all showing the exact same malfunction even though
there are no magnetic devices close to them whatsoever.Just to be sure I
moved EVERY electronic device in my apartment over to my friend's place
across the hall in order to rule out my surround reciever, subwoofer,
speakers etc.. but the problem persisted. I then moved the TV to a different
spot in the living room and got the same funny colors but they were in
slightly different areas on the screen as before.Hmmmm!! my speakers are
shielded and can be put right on the TV without any interference but the TV
seems to be picking up a high magnetic field from somewhere even though
theres nothing magnetic near it.
If anyone has any ideas as to what to do to shield the TV or find the
offending source please respond.
Thanks for reading such a long post.
Cheers.

Ths colour patterns shifted when moving the tele to another location? The
set is reacting to Earth's magnetic field and needs to degauss itself? Leave
the set in one position for over an hour, switched off, allowing it to cool
down so when powered back on the degauss circuitry will take effect. Then
eveluate the picture quality. Normally, when the degauss circuit functions
you will hear a slight thrumm or buzzing noise, commonly when the set is
first powered on.

Thank you for your reply. I will try that and let you know if it solves the
problem.

I unplugged the set for an hour and a half and it was fine for about 10
minutes then the bad spots started to show up again.BTW I did hear a slight
buzz when it first came on,this is normal I assume as it was probably the
degauss kicking in.I live in the downtown/business district of the city with
lot of transformers and wires around the building but no high tension wires
or substations nearby. It's highly unlikely that the degauss isn't working
properly since this the 3rd brand new set that has malfunctioned this way.
Is there anything else I can try? are there devices to protect a TV from
magnetic interference?

Depending on how large the external magnetic fields are in your specific
area, the only way would to be in a soft iron surround building with
automatic degaussing applied to the whole structue.
You mention that are some fairly large transformers in the same physical
area of your apartment, maybe these are developing the magnetic
interference. Have you tried another brand of tv with success?
