I have just purchased an electronic programmable thermostat. The old
one that I had was the old dial type. Anyway, here is the problem... I
installed it and for some reason every once in a while both the heater
and the air conditioner will come on. This is a dangerous situation
since I think that it will cause carbon monoxide. I'm a newbe with
electronics and I'm not sure what to do. I have installed two separate
electronic models thinking that it was the thermostat.

    Here is my setup:

Gas Heater / electric air conditioner / unknown models.

5 wires coming from the wall. I think that they are white, yellow,
    blue, red, and BROWN????

The previous model has been thrown away, but I do remember a small
like jumper type wire connecting two of the pins inside of the
thermostat.I don't know what the brown wire is though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  2. Your main problem is knowing what the wires coming from the wall are
connected to. I don't know if there is a standard colour scheme for these
but I would hazard a guess that even if there was there would be no
guarantee that they are used in that manner. Due to your failing to keep
connection data I reckon you will have to trace them out (keep a diagram
:)then the solution will be simple, nice try but ya gonna have to get the
    ole multimeter out !!
