The VeggieGen is running Veggie! Sorta ....
Tonight we fired up on 50/50 Kerosene and Waste Vegetable Oil. The
Detroit Diesel is loving the mix and is purring like a kitten!
Smells sweet. The details of our oil filtration system are coming
shortly. Tomorrow the heat exchanger gets installed in the Veggie
tank for V100 (100% Veggie). We also hope to get the muffler installed .....

I'm wondering how long the fuel system is going to last on
this stuff, not to mention the lubrication system. I don't
doubt the stuff'll burn.

How many hectares per quad???

Don't forget the relevant question.

Best, Dan.

We have over 100k miles on our other veggie engines. It'll last fine! Veggie
oil has much higher lubricity than diesel, and the injectors stay cleaner as
well.

Immaterial when I get my veggie from restaurants, not hectares. However, 25
acres of sunflowers provides 1300 gallons of veggie. Corn provides less
veggie, bur also provides ethanol, animal feed, biomethane and fertilizer,
if configured properly, from the same bushel.

dont forget to go to your fast food and chip shops most cook in veggie
oil and it is easy to filter then burn

Has anyone read this:
From http://scitation.aip.org/journals/doc/JETPEZ-ft/vol_125/iss_2/604_1.html
Neat vegetable oils or their blends with diesel, however, pose
various long-term problems in compression ignition engines, e.g.,
poor atomization characteristics, ring-sticking, injector coking,
injector deposits, injector pump failure, and lube oil dilution by
crank-case polymerization

yes, they would if you try to run them cold, and don't do oil changes.
heated oil, proper oil changes, and startup/shutdown on biodiesel (B100)
eliminate these concerns.
Have you experienced, are you concerned with these problems?

No, for the above reasons.
Does your startup/shutdown on diesel take care of the injector coking
problem? (I thought coking was due to lean air conditions with a hot
fuel, but i could be mistaken.)

yes, the biodiesel (or diesel, but biodiesel does a better job) keeps things
clean.
The article does go on to praise using B20 instead of pure diesel
however.

B20 is a half measure (well, not even half).
I have an engineer here shouting "danger will robinson!" whenever I
talk about using WVO in a diesel engine. He says you could get away
with it in older engines, but modern ones will fail. (he says within
one tank.) Any ammunition (articles, studies) I can use to counter?
(he does concede that BioDiesel is good stuff)

well, he's wrong. We have hundreds of thousands of miles in all kinds of
engines in over a decade to prove it to him. he's thinking cold oil, without
the startup/shutdown step. heated oil with that step eliminates the issues.
The ammo can be as technical as you want, he is an engineer for the
section of ASTM that deals with motor oils. ;) (the lubrication side
of things, not oil as a fuel side)

I have a 1983 vw diesel with 120k miles on veggie he can have to play with
to prove it to himself. he just has to come pick it up.

Veggetable oils should not be used to cook or deep fry food. They
form dangerous transfatty acids and oxidation products known to cause
cancer, stroke, cardiac problems, arthritis and other degenerative
diseases.

Even olive oil does not perform as well as animal fats when used to
cook.
<snip>

*Everything* I've read about cooking fats disagrees with this. Please
provide a reference to a reputable source that shows animal fats are
healthier for frying than vegetable oils.

Animal fats used for cooking (beef, pork, sheep) are all saturated fats.
Saturated fats are very bad for your arteries, but tasty. Mono- and
Polyunsaturated vegetable oils may not be as stable for prolonged
commercial deep frying, but I can't find any reputable information that
says simply heating an unsaturated fat will convert some of it into a
hydrogenated fat (a trans-fatty acid).

Maybe you are confusing the trans-fatty acid health problem with the
acrylamide health problem:

http://www.drlam.com/opinion/french_fries.cfm

This has to do with heating carbohydrates to very high temperatures, and
is independent of the cooking oil used.
