"Auto magazines to put Tesla electric sports car to the test

San Carlos firm's 2008 models already sold out

By Mark Abramson, MEDIANEWS STAFF
Article Last Updated: 12/02/2007 02:46:16 AM PST

SAN CARLOS -- As far as sports cars go, the San Carlos-based Tesla
Motors Roadster can really hum.

The electric-powered car is so quiet, in fact, that one can barely
hear the motor when the gas pedal is floored -- but its acceleration is
definitely noticeable. The 2,700-pound, two-door vehicle can go from
zero to60 mph in a Ferrari-like time of under four seconds.

"It feels totally different than an internal combustion engine," said
Aaron Platshon, marketing manager for the Tesla Roadster. "It gets you
off the line so quickly."

Tesla officials are now busy gearing up for another milestone --
letting top automotive magazine representatives test-drive the
Roadster on Bay Area roads next week. Motor Trend, Road & Track and
other publications will critique the $98,000-plus car's performance
and handling. (Options such as a navigation system, mobile charger and
a $3,200 carbon fiber hardtop can raise the price to about $106,000.)

"That will be our first exposure with the mainstream media," said Zak
Edson, Tesla's senior manager for member services. "It is important,
because a lot of people read (those magazines)."

The reviews are to appear in February and March. "

I blame their energy profligacy - they should be more like me. If God
had intended us to use central heating he wouldn't have invented the
hoody, not endowed us with the ability to self-heat via shivering.

Nobody mentioned peak oil in this thread. That's your doomday cult. As
crude prices rise, people are buying fuel efficient vehicles. If they
also go their first 100km on batteries, fuel usage drops further.

No, it just moves from the road to the power plant.

Cheers!

The electric-powered car is so quiet, in fact, that one can barely hear
the motor when the gas pedal is floored -- but its acceleration is
definitely noticeable. The 2,700-pound, two-door vehicle can go from
zero to60 mph in a Ferrari-like time of under four seconds.

So, how far can it go on a charge?

I saw an electric bike that would do a 1/4 mile in something insane like
3 seconds, but you had to recharge it every run.

Thanks,
Rich

Well, it has been nearly 50 years since I took Chem, but as I recall two
hydrogens is four atoms of hydrogen, since H2 is the way hydrogen
exists. Helium on the other hand exists as a monatomic atom.

I could be wrong, but I'm not going to go look it up.

It wasn't clear at first that you were talking about molecules, but
I still take exception to the idea that you could jam a whole molecule
into a fusing nucleus. ;-)

Cheers!

I saw a top fuel dragster go from 0 to 200 mph in 1/4 mile, but you had to
refuel it every run.
I even saw an idiot making ridiculous and irrelevant claims.

Completing the run at about Mach 1 it would seem, assuming constant
acceleration.

Very basic physic as ever !

e = a.t^2/2 1/4 mile = 400m done in 3 seconds

400 = a * (3 * 3) /2
a = 2 * 400/9 = 88.9 m/s2 (acceleration = 9G)
terminal speed: v = a.t = 88.9 * 3 = 267 m/s
(Mach 1 is 314 m/s IIRC)

It's often funny here :)

That's a darn good one for the old faith-based gipper.

How about including some kind of internal/robo auto-policing of their
own kind?
