I have a project in mind that I want to prototype with an Arduino/Freeduino, I need some kind of sensor but I am not sure what it would be (I am new to electronics).

What I would need, conceptually, is something you would put on a rope for tug-o-war that measures the pressure/tension/stretching of the rope. Is such a thing available?

Strain Gauges normally output a very small signal, you may need to increase the resolution before trying to input to the normal analogue input to a μP.

    How about a spring balance?
The problem with any system will be the jerks in the tension.
