Tektronix 7844 Power supply issue

Have a 7844 in my shop that had a no power condition. I replaced known faulty capacitors and now the unit powers on. However, when I connect the CRT anode wire the unit continuously cuts on/off and when on the CRT is full intensity. Initial turn on was with anode plugged in and we had smoke from power supply, but we have no obvious damaged components and all voltage points on the power supply and unit boards, except CRT board in top left rear of unit, are in tolerance. Obviously, something is bad. Does anyone have any experience with these units? This is the first we have had and the service manual has horrible troubleshooting guides.

i do have the manual. I didn't have any luck finding material related to my problem. They have a flow chart for no power or power with problems. however, no section for cuts on/off repeatedly.
