Tecumseh Carburator Question

Hi.

I have a Sears Gamefisher 7.5 HP outboard motor that's about 25 years old.
The carburator has a little reddish-brown rubber(?) bladder type thing that
is inserted inside a hole about 3/8" diameter on the engine/throttle side of
the carburator. It is about an inch long, has a hole in the end, and fits
over a small hole next to the intake on the engine. I cannot find it on
either of two parts diagrams for this specific carburator. The one I have
has a split in it and I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to. Can someone
tell me what this part is and what it's for? Is this something that needs
to be replaced during routine maintenance? The only thing I can figure is
maybe it's some kind of automatic primer bulb. Tecumseh seems to like
primer bulbs.

I emailed Tecumseh and they sent me my second parts diagram but offered no
advice.

Thanks.

Hi
The part you describe is a fuel pump diaphragm. If it is split it will
cause flooding. If you cannot find a correct parts diagram to order a kit
you can go to a lawn mower repair shop and get one, they come in new kits
for diaphragm carbs and most of the younger generation do not even know
what they are for, but they probably have a few left over from carb kits
that they would probably sell you for little or nothing.

It's odd that neither of my parts diagrams show that part. Otherwise the
diagram appears to be identical to my carb.

Now that I know what to call it maybe I'll have better luck searching.
Thanks.

I think you are talking about the carborator diaphram. The motor will not
run, or run very badly, if this is split. It may be a hard part to find!
Check small engine shops or build another out of sheet rubber.

Yes, it is refered to as the fuel pump diaphram but it is not flat like
others I've seen, more like the rubber squeeze bulb on an eye dropper. My
local lawnmower/tractor shop ordered one for me and I'm expecting to get it
in only two more weeks. Sears supposedly has it in stock but I have enough
problems already.

I did finally find it on the parts diagram but the illustration was so poor
that I didn't recognize it.
