Symbols on tv screen

I can not use my remote. I have new batteries. On the tv screen, they have the number 1 and a square box with signal symbols on it. What could be the problem?

You may have selected an 'external input source' as the signal to be displayed and if there isn't one connected to that input then the screen shows nothing and appears to do even less.....

Do you have the instructions for the remote? You can usually download them from the manufacturers site anyway.
