  1. For a DIY GPS receiver project i'm looking for a switching regulator
that can produce 3.3V @ 200mA from an input range of 4,5 to 30V.

The National LM3485 seems to be able to do this, but is smd (not DIY
friendly) and needs an external FET.

    Any suggestions would be welcome.

Search the branches of the parametric tree for low-hanging pinned fruit?
  3. You might consider modifying this circuit to do what you need.
