I have a customer that wants to be able to put a camera at their parent
house to check on him from time to time to make sure he is alright. He fell
the other day and nobody new anything was wrong for a couple of hours. Does
anyone know of a camera that can be used that would work with just a land
line? He does not have internet. I know I can get an IP camera and cheap
dsl for them but thought I'd see if anyone knew of a camera that could be
used just over a phone line. TIA

a house

Are you planning to have this dialed and connected constantly? Or will
the camera just know when something's wrong so it should dial in? Or
will you have it answer the phone on incoming calls... er... oops,
that's not a good idea.

I think cheap DSL and a low-end IP PTZ cam are probably your best bet...
or as Chris says, a "medical panic button keyfob".

And if you could comprehend what you read, you'd see I was agreeing with
your initial assessment. But I guess you're too busy being an asshole.
Don't expect any help from anyone else if this is the way you respond.

Hmm, maybe if you'd mentioned in the first place that you had one of
these, you wouldn't have wasted ours to begin with.

Check out Oz Vision they make a dial up unit which ties to standard
phone line and allows upto 8 cameras to be viewed and controled I use
it where customers can not get internnet or want to avoid cost and
just need to look in ocassionally.

That's a stupid fucking idea. What, is this thing going to tie up the phone
line every 15 minutes, every hour? When is the poor sod going to be able to
use the phone without interruption? Who's going to monitor the situation
24/7?

Since you appear to be an asshole based on your responses to others I will
make a suggestion (we assholes need to stick together):

How about selling a "check in" button for the old man to wear? It could be
just a fob that he has to press every hour, if the signal is missed at the CS
then a call will be made to the premises to check in on him. If no answer is
received the relatives are notified and EMS is sent. I imagine you could work
with your CS to customize the action based on the missing signal. You would
need to disable it when he's not home, maybe instruct the CS to ignore
no-check-in alerts when the system is armed in away mode.

is that what you would say to a good customer who asked you a question. if
so you wouldn't have many customers.
you use a computer and modem and dial in when you want to see the camera,
then you disconnect. old tech, but it works for areas that don't have
internet.
nobody said anything about monitoring 24-7.

seems to be alot of those around here. or maybe just morons. ;)

I didn't have a chap good answer for you either, and I think you are a
dumbass with your attitude too. You gonna come over to Az and bitch slap
me here too? Want an address? How about a bus ticket? I don't think its
all that far for you to come.

These people were thinking out loud and trying to help you. You owe them an
apology. Me not so much. I don't care.

As to your original question... No, there is not a good dialup solution for
video. Kalatel used to have some DVRs that were dial up capable, and they
sucked. On top of that they just were not very affordable for what they
did. Way back in the day when we thought 53k was fast I played with some
dial up for real time video feeds using a couple PCs, and they pretty much
sucked too.

Its possible. You will do a lot of work for a dissatisfied customer. If
the reason you are looking at this cheap approach is because the customer is
cheap, then just walk away.

The cheap DSL is the correct solution, and if you come in here and ask
nicely and don't threaten me and my friends I'll try to help you make it
work even if they don't have a static IP address. Of course if you already
know how then you don't need my or anybody else's help.

Another possible solution is long range wireless with patch or even
parabolic antennas if the parties are only a few miles apart and you can
achieve line of site. Trango Systems is the best provider for this type of
product, but its not cheap. If the customer asks you if there is a cheaper
wireless that will work then, again, just walk away.

Again lose the attitude and apologize and we will be more inclined to help
you in the future.

I'd do it the other way around... have the modem dial out and upload a few
stills at intervals, then hang up. That way you don't wake the guy up or
disturb him with an incoming data call.
