I have an 18 year old Panasonic phone. still what to use, as it has 5 mailboxes plaus call forwarding when I receive messages...

The transistor to be replaced is a 2SD2137. It shows in cross-ref. as OEM only.

My real question is how can I find similar transistors to try out and substitute? I know it is chancy, however, i would like to try and save this thing.
I have the Data sheet

Is there a method of searching Cross Reference guides by the semiconductor specifications instead of by part number?

Did you google for it? The very first hit is the datasheet for it. (edit: I initially read that as you NOT having the datasheet)

You're looking for an NPN 80V 5A 15W 30MHz bipolar transistor with hfe between about 70 and 250

Do you want me to look one up for you? (hint: use Digikey)

www.americanmicrosemiconductor.com says they have this in stock at $12.62

The only crosses I found for the 2SD2137 are:
2SD1406, 2SD1585, 2SD1985, 2SD1913, you can check the data sheets to see if
any of them would work. I couldn't find an NTE equivalent.

I would look at this and this.

Neither of those are stocked by digikey, but maybe you can find then somewhere if they look OK.

If you know more about the application in the circuit you may be able to broaden your search to find other transistors.
