Strange nut source needed

We picked up a great heaping bunch of 3.5 mm miniature phone jacks that
are missing their mounting hardware.

Neither a normal 1/4-42 nut nor an almost normal 6x0.75 fine pitch
metric nut seems to fit properly.

Best remaining guess is that it is a 6x0.5 metric nut.

Mouser lists them on page 1479 but declines any order.

Any sources for less than three cents each?

....

I don't know of a specific source, but have one
suggestion - if you don't have a metric thread gage,
use a typical CD-drive mounting screw, M3-0.5,
to test if the pitch is .5 mm.

McMaster-Carr has probably the best selection of hardware in the US.
http://www.mcmaster.com/ If you can't find it there, it probably isn't made.

Why don't you measure it ?

That would be my first guess. M6 x P0.5. Probably supplied with a
knurl rather than a hex, and are not standard nuts, they're a screw
machine part made specifically for that kind of component.

Not domestic, I'm afraid. They're normally thrown in with the jacks.
You might be lucky and find someone who makes their own nut or
something and has heaps of them laying around.

Dunno about less than 3 cents (probably in volume though) but try
Maryland Metrics. They make to order so if they don't have them in
stock I'm sure they can work out what you need.

You really must do something about that insomnia. The impact on your

Isn't the obvious solution that Don just get out the lathe and make
some nuts, and then tap them with the tap he must have?

If I had a decent lathe I'd try it. Buy some long hex spacers, drill
and tap the end, slice a few off and repeat till its too short to cut
any more pieces. Even if he doesn't have the right tap, they aren't
that expensive.
