OK. You need to plug the red probe into the middle socket on the multimeter for normal measurements. That's the socket marked "VΩmA" or something like it (I can't see all of the marking in the photo).

The top socket on the multimeter, marked "10A", is only for measuring high DC currents, using the 10A range on the range selector. All other measurements use the middle socket for the red lead and the bottom socket for the black lead.

So that's a manual ranging multimeter and you need to use it as we described. Use the appropriate range group according to what you're measuring - DCV for DC voltage, DCA for DC current (amps), and Ω for resistance. Within the range group, use the lowest range that doesn't give you the overrange indication, "1 ." or similar.
