Speed control of AC Asynchronous Pond Pump

Hi,

I am in the midst of designing a new filtration system for my pond known as a Bakki Shower. This shower will be powered by an AC Asycnhronous Pond Pump, most likely an OASE Aquamax 10,000, which is 110W.

For noise reasons, I'd like to control the speed of the water flow, so I can reduce it at night. Oase do make a speed control for this sort of motor, known as an In scenio FM Master 3:

The catch is it costs around 180pounds. They say it is a 'phase gate controller'. I was wondering if a ceiling fan speed control would work, such as the one linked below:

Any help much appreciated. I am new to the forum. Once I have worked out if this would work or some other cheap alternative, I want to be able to set a timer so the pump switches from normal power to reduced power at a time I want in the evening, and then back onto full power in the morning.

I guess there is some kind of switch I could use?

I doub't a simple phase copping dimmer like the Ebay link would do. For AC pumps you really want a VF (variable frequency drive).

You could buy a Blue Eco pump which is a super high efficiency BLDC (Brush-less DC pump) which comes with a BLDC driver and can go any speed by just using either up/down arrows on controller or using its 0-10v control input, They are VERY quiet in operation but are pretty expensive http://www.absolute-koi.com/subcat1865.html but 23000 litres/hours 240watts is very efficient.

VFD's do not work well with 1PH motors, this is the reason that most use a 3ph motor with a 1ph supply VFD.
If only 110w you may be OK with the triac version.
The other alternative is to throttle the output, this also reduces the load, if a common radial vane pump.
