Sony VCR - display worth fixing?

I have an older Sony VCR (1990 vintage?), model SLV-575
that works otherwise great. Lately, on the display screen,
other information gets displayed, which is weaker than the
regular numbers - i.e when SP is selected, it also shows a
faint LP or EP that pulses along the same "beat" as
the seconds from the timer.
Also, when channel "3" is selected, it looks very close to a
number "8" - most of this being on the right side of the screen
only.
There is no service / repair center in my city that is nearby,
so instead of wasting a very long drive to the nearest location,
would anyone know whether this sounds more like an electrical
component that is failing, of if that is a regular aging sign of a
VCR that old, and the price of a new display would be more
than a new VCR? Any ideas would be welcome, Fred

Hi Fred!

This is a common failure. Just replace all electrolytic capacitor on
the power supply. Very unexpensive fix.

Good luck!

that's my thought also... electrolytic (from my experience) are the first to
go. Please be sure to watch the working voltage and the capacitance
rating.....
