Sony KV-24FS100 blinks twice - bad flyback

Hi all. I have here a Sony KV-24FS100. 2003 model. Came in with the
following symptom -- hit power button and red led flashes twice. After doing
some looking over and tests, where starting would produce a shaky hum for a
couple of seconds, I looked over the horizontal section. All small items
checked good. HOT, etc. Good solder joints. I check for high voltage. None
found. I remove flyback and substitute another Sony flyback, strung across
bench with wires, connected to B+ and Horizontal connections. Hit starter,
have all the high voltage I would like. Sub old one in same manner, arcs
nicely across 2 pins. So, flyback is worthless.

Now my question -- do you all recommend original Sony in this set, or is the
ASTI aftermarket preferred. Reason I ask is this -- ASTI is out of stock.
Tritronics is out of ASTIs but has plenty of original Sonys. Is there a
problem with reliability in Sonys version, or is it just because ASTI is
cheaper? I want to do the owner right and safely, and give him a good set.

Cheers, Danny

You must go for the original part, if you don't want to see the set back
again within a few months, or weeks. Also, in the Sony sets, it is important
to find the cause of the failure. I used to also change the HOT at the same
time. This was specified to us by Sony. We also used an ESR meter to verify
all the caps in the area. An opened decoupler cap can cause damage. It is
important to verify the solder connections to the horizontal driver circuits
that comes from the scan generator area. In some of the models there was a
driver transformer that would go intermittent. This caused flyback and HOT
failures.

After servicing, there may be some problems with the power supply. Check the
caps in that area for high ESR, and replace as necessary. Also, check out
the vertical deflection amp at the same time.

Go with the OEM. That is your only problem......there is nothing "that
makes the flyback fail". They fail on their own.

Many thanks for your replies and emails. I checked over the usual trouble
spots for solder joints and such. I priced the fly from Sony. Now I must
establish contact with the owner. He gave me a bum phone number.

Of course if he abandons it then I have a nice spare bedroom set...

Cheers, Danny
