Sony Discman Humming noise

Hi All,
I have a Sony Discman ( model number D-NE518CK).
Lately I hear a humming noise and I can also hear the buzz of the motor
spinning on the headphones. The hum can be observed when the Volume is
minimised and the the music is playing.

Another thing that I noted is, that when this problem started the battery
consumption has gone up like crazy.

Any ideas what could be wrong. I purchased this a few months ago and I
really dont want to throw it .

Regards RJ

What is the power source? Batteries or a power adapter?

If you still have the original receipt, try to take it back to the retailer for
an exchange. - Reinhart

I did that kind of repair on a TV remote control 10 years ago.
Believe me or not, it's still working.

The location was outside any contact area. I basically used a black pencil
lead BBB type (fat) and generously wrote over the gap.

Of course this repair will only allow very low currents such as in the C-MOS
circuits of a keyboard decoder.

Hope this will help.

HOw can I generally find what are the amplifier/grounding areas ?
I dont thinkany schematics would be avaialable.

right where your headphones plug in, thats generally where the amplifier
lies.

anyway, all the caps around that circuit, well actually all the electrolytic
caps you can find need tested for high ESR.

you normally cant get a schematic for those, I always work on them the old
fashoned way.

Do the motors in these use brushes? If so, this sounds like the failure of
a noise suppression cap...used to have this problem back in the days of
8-tracks....
