Some kind of free energy saving software for computers. I saw it on
the news and looked up the website. Looks OK but you never know.

Total advertising bollocks IMHO.

A suitable computer to run Vista uses vastly more power (more processing
power required) than one designed to run any previous version of Windows,
never mind DOS or Linux.

Never mind that certain manufactureres other than Intel manufacture CPUs
that use a fraction of the power that Intel ones do. And watch the power
consumption of your video card too.

VIA.

Intel makes some low power CPUs, too, in both x86 and ARM architectures.

I'm too lazy right now to check if AMD makes any. I heard (on Slashdot)
that NVIDIA might get into the CPU making business.

Weren't some early IBM PCs even labeled "1" and "0" on their power
switches? (Albeit stylized to be more like a capital I and a big O?)

If you're being paid for your time, it's seldom cheaper to completely
power down a PC than to just leave it in standyby overnight.

Only if you're foolish enough to do *nothing* while watching the thing boot
up. I don't know very many that do that. Heck, even getting a cup of
coffee while it boots up would avoid watching the thing boot and would be a
sort of multi-tasking.
