Is there anone who has solar heating?
    If so, what type?
I read that it is a maintenance nightmare...
    Anyone found a solution?

You might try (I added it in to this reply). Yes, there
are several folks that have used solar thermal heating of one form or
another. As far as maintenance, I think you'll find it's "all over the map,
    from easy to nightmare".

I am in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Did you have some specific advice?

    The way I heard it...

I would say an air system would be lower maintenance
than the water system. Air heat takes a thermal mass to store.
Water is the thermal mass in a water system.
I would say that an air system is simpler to build and install.

I wondered if you were the David Dawson who went to Canada from England -
    the beekeeper ...

I went from Canada to England when I was 4 and came back when I was 5.
I don't keep bees, it would be a bit tricky in the apartment ;)

    I don't mind bees though.

Easy, actually :) But you might have been the David I knew.
