I am new to electronic. I wanted to power my arduino with old smps that I had for it I connected the green wire(psu on) with the black wire( com ground) and used an hdd for dummy load. After that I connected my arduino with 12v line . It worked for about 1 min after which the smps is not starting.

Can anyone tell me what has happened and why.

Some PSU's require a minimum load on 5 volts line. A HDD will not be spinning all the time, it will start and then stop after a few seconds. Try using a 6 volt, 6 or 12 Watt bulb on the 5 V line.
